Trust me, I’ve been there!
The idea of sorting through all the rooms filled with belongings can be so overwhelming and it’s easier to push it off for another time.
Here are some of my decluttering tips that will help you declutter your home in just one weekend.
I never seem to have enough time, so I completely understand this declutter challenge you all might be facing. As a busy mom, it can be hard to summon the motivation to tackle the chores you’ve been putting off and to toss or organize your scattered possessions. Take this declutter challenge to clean your entire home in just one weekend!
As a possible solution, you can just sit and cancel all your plans for the weekend, and get to work.
How To Declutter Your Home In A Weekend
I will walk you through the process to declutter everything on your weekend, step-by-step. It takes all of one weekend to go everything room by room, and in the end, you’ll have the clutter-free home you need and deserve!
First, you must know there are two parts to declutter your home in one weekend:
Part 1: Planning To Declutter Your Home In A Weekend
The thing you want to know is will your one weekend turn your home into a decluttered heaven? Well, the answer is no. However, one weekend can help you transform your house into an amazing, chaos-free and peaceful place.
After this weekend, it will be much easier for you to keep this process going on and finally, you will achieve what you desire.
You may not get all of your hidden drawers and space cleared, but you will see a noticeable difference. In this step, you mainly plan out how to structure your decluttering process.
This part will help you in the long run as these are some points you might want to hold on to permanently if you want to declutter your home and keep it that way. So let’s get started with the planning process.
Get Your Family And Friends On Board
The first step to planning to declutter your home is to talk to your family. They play a very important role. When it comes to an organized home, each and every member plays his role.
Talk to them about how a better life will be if you start to have a minimalist lifestyle. Share your views with your husband and kids on how better it is to have less and be happier with that.
You can also call your friends, mention your plans, and ask if they’re willing to assist. This can even be in the form of entertaining kids if you plan on doing your chores with them present. This help can actually help you a lot to declutter and organize your house.
If you are like me you would prefer to do all the work peacefully by sending everyone out. If this works for you then this is the best strategy.
Assign Roles And Set Rules
Now here is the time to talk to everyone about what you are planning to do on the weekend and ask what they are going to do about it. I mean seriously, when I am doing the whole process of decluttering, I simply like everyone out of the house.
You can do this or ask them to help you. If they are helping you assign roles for each and every one. This can help you get less overwhelmed on the day when you plan to declutter and downsize.
This is also the time when you can ask them about their opinions on decluttering and throwing away their stuff. This will help ease your task for the upcoming weekend.
This will make sure no one shows up on that day asking you for another round of decluttering because you either threw their stuff of that stuff you kept had to be thrown. It happened a lot with me so now I plan before proceeding.
Now, this is an essential step in planning. Before proceeding to actual cleaning and decluttering, decide which rooms you want to tackle first. For me, the most important room is the bedroom. When I am done with that, I know I can easily go on with the others. It’s my advice to choose the bedroom first. This way you will be able to declutter your entire home fast.
Take some time out and map out a plan of action. A simple plan can be:
- Friday: bedroom (including closet), bathrooms
- Saturday: kitchen, kid’s room, playroom, laundry room
- Sunday: storage, garage, donate and sell items
Once you have figured out which areas of the house you plan to work on each day, take things to the next level by preparing a planner where you list out rooms and approximate time taken to clean the room. This will be discussed in part 2.
Gather Your Supplies
Once you have decided which room or area you want to declutter first. Its time to gather all your supplies and keep aside. To make your decluttering successful you will need a few items:
- Large trash bags to throw away items
- Empty boxes to fill up things you want to get rid of
- A timer or any app in your phone to keep track of time
- Markers and sticky notes to label boxes and items you need to sell or donate
Questions To Ask Yourself
Before even touching your stuff ask yourself some questions. This is a crucial step before moving to the next point. This will help you take immediate decisions and help you declutter your home faster:
- Is it broken, and if so, will I repair it in the next month?
- Do I have duplicates of this item?
- Am I happy about this?
- Is it here only out of guilt?
- Do I have sentimental reasons attached to it?
- Have I used it in the past year?
- If not, will you ever use it?
- Does it fit in any room?
- Does it fit my current lifestyle?
- Would I buy any replacement for this?
- Is it worth time and money to keep?
These questions will help you go to the next step where you decide what you need to do with the items.
Now Sort your stuff
After you have planned which rooms you would tackle on which day of the weekend now it’s time for some little sorting. You need to sort everything you go through. Give yourself only four options:
- Throw away
- Gift or donate
- Keep or relocate
You can simply make huge boxes and label them with the exact terms mentioned above. Trust me, this will help you to declutter your home so easily. This is another main step in planning.

Donate Or Sell As Early As Possible
As soon as you have a donation pile ready go ahead and load it into your car. This may take some time, but if you did this step prior to starting your decluttering process, trust me, it will save you a ton of time.
You will feel incredibly accomplished when this stuff is gone. If there is still anything left, you can get rid of it on your weekend.
If you are selling something, don’t wait. Go ahead and snap a photo with your phone and list it for sale. If you are selling items, Facebook Marketplace is awesome.
If you’re selling clothes, Thredup is one of my most favorite stores. They even send you a bag and pay for your shipping. You don’t have to leave your home.
Women especially moms tend to do a lot of shopping. Sometimes, we buy things we don’t need. If we stop doing this, we can be able to keep the messes to a minimum.
So, learn how to stop shopping. Now that you are on declutter challenge and trying to get rid of all the clutter, it’s time to temper your purchases.
When I lived in a two-bedroom rental apartment, I was very irresponsible with my finances. The more I purchased, the tiny house got more cluttered.
With years of experience, I realized it is not the clutter that makes you feel home, it’s the way you design and how much love you put into it.

Part 2: Scheduling To Declutter Your Home In A Weekend
This is the final and the practical part where you will get the details on how to declutter your home fast in just one weekend. After all the week spent on planning now its time to form a schedule to help you get things done.
To help you schedule, you can download our planner. Simply add the room and the estimated time to declutter your room or area. You can use this planner in both parts.
Remember the planning part where you allotted a certain time to finish your room. Stick to it carrying around your timer. This will help you stick to your planning schedule and get things done quicker.
It keeps you focused and doesn’t sidetrack you to other things that don’t matter. Get your supplies ready with the boxes we made in the planning section.
This weekend is all about decluttering purge! Dive deep into things in the entire house. You have a lot of things to do today but never forget to give yourself a break.
You deserve it!
You don’t want to give yourself declutter burnout! After finishing every round try to give 15 minutes break to help you energize yourself. Drink lots of water!
Friday Decluttering (Bedroom, Closet, and Bathrooms)
Declutter Your Closet (Dress And Linen)
The first step to decluttering the bedroom is the closet. The moment your closet is organized you will feel less overwhelmed and can go on with the rest of the bedroom easily.
In order to declutter the closet, first remove all the clothes and keep aside. The cleaner space will give you more control. We want a blank canvas just like when it came home the first time.
Now its time to clean the mess. Go through all the clothes asking yourself a few questions:
- Have I worn this in the past months?
- Is it torn or needs adjustments?
- Does it fit?
- Does it fit my lifestyle now?
- Is the color faded?
- Does it relate to other items in my closet?
If the answer to the above questions is “no”, then you better get rid of that. You can do a few things I mentioned above like you can sell it, donate it, gift it to a friend, or throw it away.
After completing your main closet, move on to the linen closet. It is easier to declutter the linen closet more than to declutter the main closet. Simply go through each and every towel, get rid of the old ones and arrange the new ones. Do the same for the washcloths. You donate your towels to the donation center. Just remember to keep them all in a donation box and there you go!
So, after doing the closets give yourself a 15 minutes break!
Declutter your bedroom
The next step is to declutter your bedroom. The first step is to get everything out of the bedroom that doesn’t belong there.
Move your exercise equipment or the toys laying in your bedroom. Set a rule that no kids’ toys are allowed in your bedroom. Some areas to tackle in the bedroom are:
- Underneath bed (if you have storage)
- Chest of drawers
- Floor space
- Any other furniture or area in your bedroom
Once you have laid everything out, wipe down the surface and start arranging your stuff by knowing what stays and goes out. Once all the trash is cleared you will have some more storage.
After finishing the bedroom give yourself a 15 minutes break!
Declutter Your Bathrooms
What I believe is, it is a lot easier to declutter bathroom than any other place in our homes as there are no emotional ties to things in the bathroom.
When you declutter your bathroom, start by taking out everything in the cabinets:
- Expired medications
- Products you don’t use anymore
- Accessories you don’t use anymore
- Make room for anything that’s lying outside that can be stored inside
- Arrange all your cleaning supplies
Once you have decluttered storage cabinets, the task becomes much simpler. Its time to wipe down the entire bathroom. Use your supplies and you are done.
This was the last area to tackle is this Friday. Finally, I bet you would be tired!
Have dinner and take some rest. You will feel a lot more accomplished by how efficiently you decluttered one area in your house.
Saturday: Decluttering (Kitchen, Kid’s Room, Playroom And Laundry room)
Declutter Your kitchen
The next day is here! After finishing your breakfast lets get on to the brass tacks. Set your timer and go for the kitchen. This can be a massive undertaking, but don’t worry we will be able to do it with just a little planning. You might want to hit upon the areas:
- Kitchen cabinets
- Counter surface clutter
- Kitchen appliances
- Expired food items
- What you use regularly and what not
- Underneath sink and cleaning supplies
- Junk drawers
- Your cups, mugs, and dishes
- Your refrigerator
The steps are simple again. Just take everything pout and decide what stays and what leaves the house. Discard the items which are expired.
Clean out the surface and keep only items you need or use on a daily bases.
You will have more space in the cabinets now. Try to utilize this space and clear off the countertops. This will make your kitchen look cleaner and bigger.
After finishing with your cabinets and pantry, clean out your refrigerator. Take out everything and place things back in proper order.
Finally, give yourself a 15 minutes break. You have done a lot!
Declutter Kids’ Rooms And Playroom
You will be tired by now and you have to declutter your kids’ room. But trust me, it is easier than getting rid of your own stuff. Things you can consider getting rid of:
- Clothes which no longer fit
- Toys they have outgrown
- Stuff stuffed in their dresser
- Books they have stopped reading
- Trash, trash, trash (I don’t know why)
Start off with their closet and move to the dresser and toy storage. This will help you declutter your home faster. Go for quick hits. Deep cleaning is always meant for mini-purges throughout the year. For now, the focus on the clutter, get rid of it and prevent that stuff from entering your home again.
Use baskets for toy storage and for books. You can use small boxes inside the drawers to organize their stuff.

You have finished your task to declutter the kids’ room. Now you move on to their playroom. Well, now it should go even faster. The toys and other stuff need to be arranged and decide what should be kept and what should be removed.
When you’re done with their room, it’s time for you to take some rest. Have your lunch and give yourself some rest!
Declutter The Laundry Room
Sometimes the laundry room can actually become your junk room. Since no one enters that room probably other than you, you might want to stuff everything there. Create an organizational system for your laundry room.
First, remove everything, wipe down the surface, and start arranging the things. You can use storage baskets to keep things hidden but improve the overall look of your laundry room you can use mason jars to store your laundry pods or dishwasher too.
Sunday: Decluttering (storage, Garage, Donate And Sell items)
Declutter The Storage
Now that you have almost completed you declutter your home mission, time to declutter the storage. Set your timer and get rid of the items in the storage to declutter your home fast! Areas you might want to consider decluttering and organizing:
- Shoe racks and boxes
- Arts and crafts
- Extra closets
- Living room and drawers there (if any)
Get rid of anything and everything you feel you don’t need anymore or that has worn out. Declutter everything and give yourself a thumbs up!
Pat yourself and take a 15 minutes break. You deserve it!
Declutter Your Garage
The second last step is to declutter the garage. Now, you don’t have to organize the entire garage this day. Simply focus on the quick hits and you are done. Set your timer, and know where the clutter is and where it belongs.
- Things you need to consider when you plan to declutter your garage:
- Tools you never use or those which are crappy
- Kids stuff you kept there for a long time
- Any holiday or seasonal items you no longer use
- Containers or boxes you will never use
You can either sell or donate these times you no longer use. This is the time for some extra cash this weekend!
Time for some lunch break. Enjoy your rest time.
Donate And Sell Items
If you haven’t done this part in the planning section or you have some more items now in your donation or selling basket, today is the day.
Put all the stuff in your car and get ready to get rid of them. You will feel a lot more accomplished when you are done with this step. The sooner the better.
You’re Done! Celebrate Your Success
Now that the hard work is over, appreciate what you have done! Enjoy some extra time pampering yourself, or with your friends.
